Overview
Madarao Kogen has earned a devoted following among powder enthusiasts for its exceptional tree skiing terrain. The resort's 31 courses include numerous officially marked tree run zones through beautifully spaced birch and beech forests, something relatively rare among Japanese ski resorts. Located in the northern Nagano highlands, Madarao benefits from heavy snowfall carried by weather systems from the Sea of Japan, producing light, dry powder that fills the trees throughout the season.
The resort connects to neighboring Tangram Ski Circus, adding further variety on a combined lift pass. Madarao has cultivated a strong international community, with English-speaking staff and a growing number of foreign-owned lodges and bars in the village. Despite this, it remains far less crowded than Hakuba or Nozawa Onsen, offering genuine powder days without the lines. The resort is conveniently accessed via shinkansen to Iiyama Station.
