Overview
Nozawa Onsen is one of Japan's most iconic ski destinations, seamlessly blending world-class skiing with centuries-old hot spring culture. The resort offers 36 courses across a massive 1,085 meters of vertical drop, from the summit at 1,650m down to the village at 565m. The terrain ranges from gentle practice slopes near the village to challenging expert runs and powder bowls on the upper mountain, particularly the famous Yamabiko area.
The village itself is the true star of Nozawa Onsen, with 13 free public bathhouses (sotoyu) fed by natural hot springs scattered along its narrow streets. Traditional ryokan, craft shops, and izakaya line the atmospheric lanes, creating a quintessentially Japanese mountain village experience. The annual Dosojin Fire Festival in January is one of Japan's most spectacular winter events. With excellent shinkansen access via Iiyama Station, Nozawa Onsen is one of the most convenient major ski areas to reach from Tokyo.
